Cards

A card is a reminder with a few extras: a title, an optional @context, notes, a due date, a color and a flag whose meaning depends on the column. Everything you save goes straight into Reminders, so the Reminders app and your other devices see it too.

  1. Choose New › New Card (⌘N on Mac), or tap + on a list on the board.
  2. Enter a Title, pick the List and a color. The sheet shows the Column the card lands in.
  3. Tap Create.

New Card puts the card into the list you have selected, otherwise into your Inbox. The + on a list puts it into that list and column. Write @ and a word in the title, for example “Buy stamps @errands”, and the card gets that context.

For many cards at once, open a list’s menu (…) and choose Batch Entries…: one card per line. Dashes and bullets are stripped, and @contexts in a line become the card’s context.

Tap a card to open it in the inspector. On Mac and iPad it appears in the right column; on iPad each section is a page you reach with the tabs at the top or by swiping. On iPhone it opens in the Details sheet.

  • Title and Context: the context says where or with what you can do the card, for example @phone. Leave the field empty to remove it.
  • Column: Todo, Progress or Done.
  • The color picker: see Colors and the Color Legend.
  • List shows the card’s list. To move a card to another list, drop it onto a card of that list in Todo, or use Move › List after selecting it.
  • Project: if the list belongs to a project, Show Project, Lists and Brainstorm take you there.
  • Due: switch on Has Due Date and pick the date.
  • Notes: free text.
  • Attachments: if files are attached to the card, they are listed here. Tap one to open it in Documents.
  • Status shows the flag and whether the card repeats or is waiting for someone.

Changes take effect when you tap Save. On Mac it sits at the bottom of the inspector (⌘S). On iPad it sits at the top right, above the column. On iPhone it is in the top bar of the Details sheet. If Reminders can’t save the card, iKanban says so and keeps your changes in the form.

A card has one flag, and its meaning depends on the column:

  • In Todo it means Next: do this soon.
  • In Progress it means Ready: ready to hand over.
  • In Done it means Show: the card is featured on the Apple TV app (see Apple Watch and Apple TV).

Set or remove it with Set Flag or Remove Flag in the card’s menu (right-click on Mac, touch and hold on iPad and iPhone). Flagged cards show a small flag. Moving a card to Done keeps its flag; any other change of column clears it, because the flag is a deliberate choice for each column.

  • Tap the circle in front of the title to complete the card; it moves to Done. Tap it again to reopen the card.
  • Drag the card to another column, or use Move to in its menu.
  • Delete Card in the card’s menu removes the reminder from Reminders.

The small line at the top of a card shows its flag, the short code of its area, its list and its column, and a checkered flag if the list belongs to a project. Below come the circle, the title and the context.

iKanban stores a card’s column, flag, order and color as small #iKanban-… tokens in the reminder’s notes. The app manages them for you and hides them from the notes field. The Reminders app shows them in the notes; leave them in place there, and the card keeps its state.
