Full Screen and Windows

Sketches, journals, pinboards and mindmaps can take the whole screen on iPad and iPhone. On Mac and iPad you can also open a pinboard or sketch in its own window, and on Mac whole project views.

Tap Full Screen (the two diagonal arrows) in the toolbar of a sketch, pinboard or mindmap. On iPad, journals open in full screen by themselves.

In full screen, the sidebar, the navigation bar, the project header, the bar at the bottom, the status bar and the Home indicator disappear. Your strokes and their undo history stay as they are.

To leave full screen, tap Exit Full Screen (the same button, arrows pointing inward) or press Esc on a hardware keyboard. On iPad, opening the right column also ends full screen, for example when you send a page to the Assistant. After a restart, iKanban always starts with the normal layout.

On every canvas the toolbar floats at the top: Insert and Select on the left, the tools of the canvas in the middle, zoom and Full Screen on the right. In sketches and journals in full screen it hides as soon as you start a stroke. To bring it back:

  • Tap the small handle at the top center, or pull it down.
  • In a sketch, tap an empty spot with your finger. This works when only Apple Pencil draws; a tap on a closed shape still opens the fill menu.
  • Assign Show Toolbar to squeeze or double-tap in Settings, section Apple Pencil.

Pinboards and mindmaps keep their toolbar in full screen.

On Mac: use the standard macOS full screen for the window. The Full Screen button isn’t shown there.

On Mac and iPad, a pinboard or sketch can have its own window, for example next to the board.

  • While a pinboard or sketch is shown, tap the window button in the project header.
  • Or choose Open ‹name› in New Window from the context menu of a pinboard or sketch in the sidebar, of its tile in the project overview, or of a sketch pinned on a pinboard.

The window keeps its pinboard or sketch, even when you switch project or area in the main window. Changes appear in every window that shows the same wall. Opening the same wall again brings its window to the front. The window has its own Inspector button, and Main Window brings the main window forward. If you rename or delete the wall, the window tells you.

On iPad you can draw in these windows and use full screen there too. iPhone doesn’t offer separate windows, and journals can’t be opened in a separate window.

  • Project views: in Overview, Planning, Lists, a mindmap or Files, the window button in the project header opens that view in a new window. For Overview, Planning and Lists, the context menu of their rows in the sidebar also offers Open … in New Window. Each window has its own selection and inspector.
  • Board window: Window › Board (⌘⇧B) opens the classic board in a window of its own: Backlog by list, Progress by context, and Archive.
  • Main window: if you closed it, choose Window › Main Window (⌘⇧0).
