Apple Watch and Apple TV

The Watch and TV apps show a snapshot of your board: what’s in progress, what’s next and, on the TV, what you finished. They don’t read Reminders themselves. iKanban on your iPhone or iPad sends them the current state.

Whenever iKanban on your iPhone or iPad loads your cards or saves a change, it updates the snapshot:

  • directly on your Apple Watch, sent from your iPhone,
  • in your private iCloud database (CloudKit), where Apple TV and Apple Watch can read it.

Private means that only devices signed in with your Apple Account can read it. The snapshot holds the cards in Progress, open cards due today, your flagged Todo cards and your flagged Done cards, each with title, list, area, @context, color, due date and flag.

iKanban on the Mac doesn’t update this snapshot. After working on the Mac, open iKanban on your iPhone or iPad to bring Watch and TV up to date.

The Watch app has two pages. Turn the Digital Crown or swipe up and down to switch:

  1. Progress: every card in Progress, in board order.
  2. Your flagged Todo cards, the ones marked Next.

Each card shows its color, area, list, title, @context and flag. Tap a card to flag or unflag it, to move it to Progress (on the second page) or to mark it done. The Watch sends the change to your iPhone, which saves it in Reminders and sends the new state back.

  • If your iPhone isn’t reachable, your actions wait and are delivered later. A line at the bottom shows how many are still on their way.
  • When you open the Watch app, it also loads the latest snapshot from iCloud. So you see recent cards even when your iPhone is at home.
  • The same line at the bottom shows the age of the data once it’s older than 30 minutes.
  • Until the first snapshot arrives, the Watch asks you to open iKanban on your iPhone once.

Add the iKanban complication to a watch face to see how many cards are in Progress. The rectangular style also shows the top card. The complication is available as circular, corner, inline and rectangular.

The TV app shows your board on the big screen in three columns, without list grouping:

  • Todo: only your flagged Todo cards (Next).
  • Progress: all cards in progress.
  • Done: only cards flagged Show, most recently completed first.

The TV is a display. You can move the focus to scroll through a column, but you can’t open or change cards. The app refreshes when you open it and every five minutes while it’s on screen. Sign in to Apple TV with the same Apple Account as your iPhone or iPad.

The flag means something different in each column: Next in Todo, Ready in Progress and Show in Done.

  1. Right-click or touch and hold a card in Done.
  2. Choose Set Flag. The card now appears in the Done column on the TV.
  3. Choose Remove Flag to take it off the TV again.

Cards flagged Next or Ready keep their flag when you move them to Done, so they show up on the TV right away. Any other move clears the flag.

  • Watch and TV show only these cards. Lists, projects, pinboards, files and search aren’t available there.
  • The TV can’t change anything. The Watch offers three actions and needs your iPhone to save them.
  • Watch and TV show what your iPhone or iPad last sent. Changes made on the Mac or in the Reminders app appear after iKanban has run on your iPhone or iPad.

Widgets on iPhone, iPad and Mac are described in Siri, Shortcuts, Spotlight and Widgets.
